Is Clothing For A Chihuahua Necessary?

There are times when adorable Chis wearing adorable clothing show at our facebook page. Sometimes, pet owners get a bad rap due to the clothes. The most common response is that goes like this “Your pet isn’t an ideal doll to with” and “let the dogs play as they please” as well as “my dog is not a fan of clothes and I wouldn’t ever force her to wear clothes”.

Each of these are legitimate points of view, but they are not fair to those who decide to dress their Chihuahuas in a fashion. There are a few legitimate reasons to dress your dog in a fashionable way. And , contrary to what is commonly believed there aren’t any dogs who hate the idea. A lot of dogs enjoy getting dressed up. I’ve experienced this myself (not when I was with me but with my Chi however, but one of my larger dogs).

The Reasons to dress your chi:

Warmth Chihuahuas are prone to getting cold quickly, so it’s an ideal idea to bring an appropriate sweater or shirt for them to wear during cold weather or in highly climate-controlled homes.
Protection Clothes are a great way to protect your paws from elements. It protects the wearer from being burned by the sun. Likewise, boots and shoes protect their feet from scorching cement or ice, sharp rocks and glass, salt , or chemicals for deicing.
Cuteness There is no doubt about the adorable factor of a tiny Chi girl wearing a frilly dress or a Chi boy dressed in a cute dress. A lot of Chihuahuas enjoy the attention they receive being so adorable in their outfits.

Why You Shouldn’t Dress Your Chi:

Your dog isn’t a fan of dressing in clothes, and is completely freaked out every time you try to put clothes on them.
Your dog can easily become overheated (usually not an issue for Chihuahuas).

So do I dress my Chihuahua Kilo? There’s a yes and no. There are a couple of sweaters I wear on her when it gets too cold. She doesn’t like it, but she’s warm. I’d like to dress her in cute little dresses, however she’s one of the dogs who really dislike dressing up so I try not to try to force her into it.

To answer the question “Do I need clothes for Chihuahuas?” the answer is entirely up to you. Chihuahuas, as small, cold-blooded creatures they have, will require some clothes, at a minimum, to stay warm and cozy. The rest is entirely up to both you and Chi.
