What exactly is a cake smash session, you might ask? It’s actually a photo shoot that is held when a child turns one year old. During the session, they are given cakes to eat or smash, or both, or none if we’re truthful. Cake smashing sessions are an enjoyable method to mark the moment of your infant turning one. Children who are one are full of curiosity and curiosity. The majority of things they come across every day are completely new to them. Play with new toys or new food items to try and new places to visit and meet new people. This activity is a wonderful method to capture the excitement and the excitement associated with it. It is usually not something that babies are familiar with at this stage, which can be the perfect setup to capture that excitement, curiosity and joy (or displeasure).
As with all of my sessions, there is the option of having your cake smash outdoors or inside with a theme backdrop (more on this later). The session will be led by a child. This means that we’ll go according to your child’s needs. The cake smash session is all about capturing your child’s personality while letting them experience it through playing. Once you’ve got an idea of what a cake smashing session really is, let’s have a look at what a smashing session looks like with me specifically.
What’s the cake that is included during a smashing session?
If you are interested in booking an event with me, the first step is to call to discuss your ideas of the photo shoot. Are you planning a concept you are thinking of? Do you have images of inspiration that you have saved on Pinterest? Do you have specific images that you’d love to obtain? We will talk about these issues and more. This will make sure that we’re in the same boat on the day of the cake smash event.

Background set-up as well as props and costumes
Once we’ve settled on the subject and I have a complete understanding of your idea, I’ll create the remaining. My studio is filled with props which I’ll employ to make your dream come to reality. If you have props you’d like to bring, let me know! I’ll get the backdrop ready for you upon arrival and can adjust the backdrop with any other accessories or props that you bring.
The decision of what to wear your child should wear to the cake smash isn’t easy. My wardrobe for studio use is yours to use. Whatever outfit I have, you can choose for your child’s photo session. I usually suggest that when we have our first meeting, parents look through my studio’s wardrobe. This way, they will be aware of what they have to choose from and decide beforehand if they would like to purchase or make use of their own outfit or choose one from my closet. Because this is a cake smashing event and often messier, some families go for a diaper-only look or the diaper and accessories.
I will bake the cake for your child’s cake smash. My bakery is one I utilize for all my sessions, to ensure fresh cakes for each session. In the initial consultation call that I have mentioned previously, we’ll discuss whether your child suffers from any particular allergies. So we can make sure that your child is in good hands during the time!
After the cake smash part of the session is completed, your child could end up being messy. To assist with cleaning up the next phase of the event will involve taking a bath. I have a small tub we can place your child in to wash them and also take some amazing photographs of their personality while they soak in their bath. It is possible to make it simple by taking a bubble bath, or add flowers or fruits to make it more unique.
How do you plan how to have a cake smashing session?
Schedule your cake smash session keeping naps in mind
Bedtime or nap time must be considered when planning an event for a cake smash. The goal of these sessions is to showcase the personality of your child, so it is important to ensure that they’re well refreshed. If your child follows schedule and takes naps each throughout the day at a particular time I’ll follow that schedule. If your child’s not following a set schedule, but seems to be most happy in certain parts during the day ensure that we plan the session for the time that they are most happy.
Let them be hungry
I would always suggest that feeding your children prior to when you go to a session to ensure they’re not hungry and irritable, but when it comes to cake smashing sessions, it is beneficial in the event that your child is hungry. You should still feed them, of course however if they’re still hungry by the time they reach the shooting, they may be more likely to delve in the cakes. If they’ve eaten the entire food then they might not be less eager to eat when they look at the cake.
Take their favorite snacks
If you’re worried that your child will be reluctant to dig deep into the dessert, make sure you have your child’s most loved snack in the pantry. Puffs, cheerios, yogurt bites, crackers, etc. Whatever ” always satisfied” snacks, they can bring it along. You can place those tiny snacks in the icing , or even a portion of the cake, to encourage them to dig in to the cake.
